Joanna's ancestor, Major Joseph Winston--the namesake of Winston-Salem, North Carolina-- served as a militia leader in the American Revolution. A statue of him stands on federal land at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park in Greensboro, North Carolina. Ten years later in the aftermath of George Floyd's murder, she came to have very different feelings about it and all other representations of enslavers in public places.
