UUCB vigil keepers outside Concord immigration courts in prayer circle, 6.2.26. Sketch by Madeline L. Phuong.
Immigrant Solidarity Project
As a congregation UUCB adopted a revised Sanctuary Statement in May 2025, pledging to resist deportation and discrimination against our immigrant neighbors.
The Immigrant Solidarity group proudly works in coalition with the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity (www.im4humanintegrity.org) and many local synagogues and churches to accompany immigrant families at immigration court and ICE check ins.
Many UUCB members participate in vigil outside the immigration courts, now concentrated in Concord CA, midday every Tuesday.
- We carpool to Concord from church, typically at 11:15 am, although timing is subject to change. We side with Love. Words of appreciation and traffic honks support us while we support others by offering snacks, blessings, small toys, information and friendship to immigrants and passersby. We often sing. Please join us! Contact Karen Elliott for more info.
- In San Francisco, Jen McDougall and a multi-faith group hold vigil nearly every Wednesday morning at 630 Sansome Street; contact Jen for more info or sign up at bit.ly/CourtVigilVolunteer.
As a project of the Social Justice Council, we work to stay updated and update the congregation on current immigration issues, and opportunities for individual and group action – a one-time action, such as showing up for threatened neighbors at their court dates, or consistently throughout the year through vigil work, court watch, supporting food distribution networks for at risk families, or family accompaniment.
- See our Smorgasbord of Solidarity Actions (shorturl.at/FQPT5 ), updated regularly. You might find an action perfectly suited to your interest and availability!
We meet together in person on the third Sunday of most months in the Meditation Room after the worship service, and participate with the church together in other ways as well, such as serving Sunday lunch together at least once a year, hosting one of the Social Justice Council meetings, and other ways.
