Love is Accepting

We will continue our focus of the the fourth Source of Faith by exploring gender roles and norms. What does it mean to be welcoming to all gender expressions and how have some people experienced discrimination and oppression based on their gender expression? This principle focuses on the Hebrew and Christian teachings, therefore we will use the story of Jacob and Rachel to explore gender norms.

Take Home

Today we learned from our fourth Unitarian Universalist Source, “Jewish and Christian teachings which tell us to love all others as we love ourselves,” and explored gender stereotypes through a story based on Jacob and Rachel, from Hebrew scripture. While we may wish to believe the damage of gender bias belongs to the past, there is still much to be learned about gender identity. We talked about gender as a feature of identity we find on a continuum, rather than a binary (male/female).

Another topic explored today is one of expressing emotions. The group role played expressing emotions and how they react to those emotions.

How are emotions expressed at home or in the community? Play a game of observer in which people in the home take turns paying special attention to how tasks are performed in the home and by who. How does this exercise inform gender identity and roles?
