The centuries-old partnership between the spoken word and music – and between ministers and musicians – in church services, sometimes includes a slight sense of competition. When dealing with the limits of time, who gets how much? Is music an ornament to the message of the word, or does it have its own intrinsic value.
Music has significant intrinsic value, and communicates sometimes better than spoken word. Our congregants have shared how much they appreciate music and services and how much it means to them.
In developing them, we look to the theme of the month and to how that resonates with what has been happening in the life of the church, the people of the congregation, and our own lives. On the practical side, we look to what musical pieces that fit the theme can be included, what readings of poetry or other spoken word feels right, and how the service shape might need to shift. Sorting out what makes sense in sharing a message mainly through music.
