This event will be on Monday evenings from Sep. 21 – Dec. 14 on Zoom. Zoom link will be provided after registration.

What do we do with the Hebrew Bible once we’ve set aside the assumption that we have to believe it? This eleven-session course, led by Rev. Dr. John Buehrens — former president of the Unitarian Universalist Association and author of Understanding the Bible: An Introduction (Beacon Press) — offers a guided, unhurried path through the text for people who are curious, doubtful, or simply want a deeper foundation than “Sunday school version” they may have grown up with. No prior knowledge assumed, and no belief required — just a willingness to read closely and ask real questions. The companion book is included in the cost of the registration.

Across eleven Monday evenings from September 21 through December 14 (with breaks for Indigenous Peoples Day and Thanksgiving weekend), we’ll move through the arc of the Hebrew Bible: the two creation stories in Genesis, the matriarchs and patriarchs, the Exodus and wilderness years, the rise of kings and prophets, the poetry of the Psalms, the hard questions of Job and Wisdom literature, and finally the prophetic and apocalyptic visions that shaped centuries of hope. Sessions run 7:00–8:30 pm on Zoom.

Registration required.
We offer this series on a sliding scale, as a practice of shared responsibility and care within our community. Please contribute according to your ability.

Land Acknowledgment

We acknowledge that this church occupies land in Huchiun in the unceded territory of the Chochenyo-speaking Ohlone people.  May we have the humility and courage to do our part to restore what has been broken and the wisdom to live into a new solidarity with Indigenous communities and the earth.

  • Help Shape Sunday Lunch at UUCB — Survey Closes August 23rd August 10, 2026
We've put together a short survey, about five minutes, to learn how important lunch is to you, what kind of food keeps you staying after service, and whether you're able to help out. Your input will directly shape how we approach Sunday lunch starting in September, so please take a few minutes to share your […]
