UUCB’s involvement in the 2027 UUA General Assembly in San Jose and takeaways from the 2026 GA, Freestone property sale status, offering mission and purpose-discernment workshops, disposition of three bequests, distinguishing between governance and operational committees, and introduction of a five-year capital budget and possible caregiving pilot program were among the topics at the August 5 Board meeting. - 2027 GA in San Jose: A task force to consider ideas like expanding youth and other UUCB participation will be considered by the Board. Melissa Rosales presented a slide show summary of the 2026 GA.
- Freestone: Property listing on the open market is expected by early September, through Laura Richards with W Real Estate. Plans to memorialize and honor its legacy will be led by Rev. Marcus.
- Mission & purpose: Rev. Marcus will work with the True Purpose Institute to offer an Adult Spiritual Development program to help members connect with their own mission and purpose, with potential for a congregational process to be determined later.
- Bequests: Accepted a bequest from Joanne Wile’s estate; designated UUCB’s Morgan Theological Endowment for internship support to receive the balance of the Boeke Pooled Income Fund; and will ask the congregation to approve spending UUCB’s final share of the Calkins Trust on deferred maintenance projects.
- Committees: Designated Endowment as an operations committee rather than a Board committee, given its outreach and informational focus on legacy giving. In September – with input from involved members – the Board will consider how the Board’s Widening the Circle Committee best fits and functions, and whether to create a governance-focused Property Committee of the Board and an operational buildings and grounds team for more hands-on work.
- Caregiving & grief support : A potential pilot program funded by member Jim Evans in honor of his late wife Ilsa was briefly introduced for Board discussion in September.
- Five-year capital projects budget: Presented for Board action in September.
- Strategic planning: Outline for Board retreat.
