Fall 2025 K-1st grade Our Whole Lives (OWL) classes
UUCB is excited to offer Our Whole Lives (OWL): Sexuality Education for Grades K-1 this fall. These OWL classes help children ages five through seven begin the lifelong process of learning about identity, relationships, safety and health. This curriculum was revised in 2024 to offer new, expansive ways of engaging with issues such as gender identity and roles, sexual orientation, race, and ability.
You might ask, “what’s religious about sexuality education”? In liberal religious sexuality education, we seek to provide roots and wings for program participants. The roots are our Unitarian Universalist religious traditions and values, which accept participants and value them for who they are so they feel good about themselves and their sexuality. The wings are the freedom they have to make meaning of their own lives; the opportunity to clarify their own values and apply them to their own experiences; and the strength to develop into their own true, best selves.
You will be actively involved as your child learns through songs, stories, activities and at-home projects that promote family dialogue. The curriculum teaches children to be proud of their bodies and carefully addresses some very basic, age-appropriate child sexual abuse prevention.
We will start with a required information session for parents and children on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 10am. The eight-session curriculum starts the following Sunday, Sept. 14 and runs through Nov. 9 (there is no class on Oct. 12). Except for the longer mandatory information session, all the classes start during regular RE time (approx. 11:15), so you should have time to attend services if you’d like before picking up your child at about 12:30.
