Poetry as a “Spiritual Practice” is a new workshop/class being offered by UUCB’s Adult Education/Exploration program.
Facilitator, Peter Guerrero, is an avid reader of poetry and uses poetry in his own spiritual practice. He delights in sharing and discovering works by poets he’s unfamiliar with. He has facilitated poetry workshops for three years at the Port Townsend UU Fellowship.
The group will meet Tuesday afternoons from November 10, 2026 until the end of January 2027 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. in the SAFIR Room. Please email adulted@uucb.org to register for this free 10-week workshop.
Each week participants will read and discuss a poem that they want to share with the group. This is an informal group and requires only your presence and willingness to share works that delight you and provide comfort in this dark season. No texts are required but a suggested bibliography will be provided at the first class.
Peter quotes poet Gregory Orr who maintains that poetry “has a crucial role to play in our psychological, imaginative, and spiritual lives.” In discussing poetry, Orr often refers to a “book.” This “book” is not a Bible, Koran, or other religious text–instead, it’s a personal collection of poems and lyrics in which you find solace, courage, and healing. By the end of the sessions, the class will have shared dozens of poems that will become the building blocks for participants to create their own personal “book.”
