Mask Yourself in a Thousand Ways

“Cloak yourself in a thousand ways, still shall I know you, Beloved,” wrote the 14th century Sufi teacher Hafiz. “I contain multitudes,” said the great American poet Walt Whitman. Contemporary humanistic psychology has articulated an understanding that people are not so much unitary individuals as dividuals, or entities made up of many parts. How do we understand and relate to our many parts? And is there a more essential self in this story?
