Where do we come from, where are we going? Religious traditions have always grappled with the questions of ultimate beginnings and endings, which we can name eschatology. Standing on the threshold of the Jewish New Year, how do we understand beginnings and endings in our this-worldly religion? How do we savor the apple and honey, the sweetness of the world, at the same time that we know so intimately its bitter pain?
