To fulfill its function of nourishing bodies and nurturing community, bread must be broken. Breaking can be a shared process of communion, a sacred experience of both mutuality and coming apart in which the breaking itself is an invitation to collective healing. But breaking can also be violence, a destruction that does not hold what is breaking in the compassionate awareness necessary for fruitful transformation. In this era when so much is breaking, how do we make a new communion out of all that is being torn apart?
