The Summer Forum is delighted to have the Peace and Justice Center’s former Executive Director, Paul George, talk with UUCB. The Peninsula Peace and Justice Center is the area’s leading grassroots voice for peace, justice & human rights. Peninsula Peace believes democracy occurs every day – when people actively participate. Based in Palo Alto, they present the world’s leading progressive speakers, produce a free monthly forum, and when needed, organize demonstrations, vigils, and petition campaigns. Since 1981, they have been the local face of effective grassroots action. Mr. George provided us with this powerful statement: “Democracy in the United States is at a critical crossroad, with minority rule looming as a very real possibility in the not-too-distant future. The ominous signs are everywhere: voter suppression and so-called “election integrity” legislation passed or under consideration in numerous statehouses, a U.S. Senate paralyzed by a filibuster invoked by the minority party, and a former president who continues to spew lies about the 2020 election results.”

Summer Forum - The International Red Cross - Diana Graham, Presenter - Virtual

Diana Graham of the Red Cross will present with a video on the International Red Cross She’ll talk to us about opportunities for volunteering. And go deep into the workings of this incredible organization — which UUs helped start!!! (don’t forget). See origin story below. The Rev. Henry Whitney Bellows was in the pulpit, preaching to his Unitarian congregation in Manhattan, when word arrived that rebel forces had attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The American Civil War had begun. Four days later, on April 25, 1861, a group of women—most of them members of Bellows' Church of All Souls—gathered to organize an aid society for the volunteer soldiers gathering on Staten Island. They were concerned about the conditions in the soldiers' camps, where spoiled goods, open latrines, poor bedding, and vermin threatened health. The women set to work making bandages and writing letters. On April 29 they organized what would become the United States Sanitary Commission, which grew into "the largest, most powerful, and most highly organized philanthropic activity that had ever been seen in America," according to historian George M. Frederickson, and provided the basis for the American Red Cross, founded 20 years later by a Universalist, Clara Barton.

Dr. Henderson has been the Director of the Shyness Institute for over 25 yrs. She is also a faculty member in Continuing Studies at Stanford University. She was a visiting scholar in the Psychology Department from 1994-2007. She also conducted research on personality variables related to shyness, and use of technology in the shy and non-shy with Philip Zimbardo. Her clinical research has translated the results of personality theory and social psychology into effective group and individual treatment strategies for shyness and social anxiety disorder, culminating in the Social Fitness Training model. Practitioner and client manuals can be ordered at shyness.com. Currently Dr. Henderson is conducting a qualitative interview study of shy leaders and is investigating mindfulness-based interventions with a focus on compassion. Interest in compassion and acceptance of self and others as an antidote to shame and social avoidance has been ongoing in her treatment of problematic shyness.

Court-appointed special advocate (CASA) and guardian ad litem (GAL) volunteers (what they’re called varies by location) make a life-changing difference for children who have experienced abuse or neglect. Each volunteer is appointed by a judge to advocate for a child’s best interest in court. Our volunteers help judges develop a fuller picture of each child’s life.
