Summer Forum: “Who Decides? A Hard Look at the Nuclear Arsenals and Policies”

The UUCB Peace Committee is sponsoring a four-part series on “Our Moral Choices in the New Nuclear Age.” June 29, July 6, July 13 and July 20, 2025
Forum 1: “Daniel Ellsberg’s Case Against Nuclear ICBM’s.” This first forum will start with the showing of a 30-minute documentary—“A Common Insanity,” which Daniel Ellsberg created shortly before his death two years ago this month. A moderated discussion will follow. (June 29)
Forum 2: “Voices of the Non-Nuclear-Armed World and the Health of the Primary Anti-Nuclear Treaties—The Nonproliferation Treaty and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.” This second forum will review the genesis and histories of these treaties and the challenges they face, the renewed nuclear arms race, and the forces pushing for, and against, a proliferation of nuclear-armed states in the 21st Century. (July 6)
Forum 3: “Who Decides? A Hard Look at the Nuclear Arsenals and Policies of the Nine Nuclear-Armed States, and the U.S. Congressional/ Laboratory/Military/ Industrial Complex.” This third forum will explore what has and is preventing any serious movement toward nuclear disarmament. Who are the change agents? (July 13)
Forum 4: “Our Moral Choices and Responsibilities in the New Nuclear Age.” This fourth forum will explore the question: Must American democracy, notwithstanding its virtues we cherish, forever be wedded to militarism and the threat and use of mass organized violence? Before it is too late? How should Unitarian Universalist congregations address these issues? (July 20)
