In the 21st century fueled by technology, data, and algorithms, math determines who has the power to shape our world.

Counted Out investigates the biggest crises of our time—including political polarization, racial inequity, and climate change–through an unexpected lens: mathematics.

In our current information economy, how we understand math—and who understands it—is a critical determinant of social and economic power. The people we date, the news we see, the education we can access, the economic resources we can tap into, the political enfranchisement we enjoy: all of it is underwritten by an invisible layer of math that few of us understand.

Through a mosaic of personal stories, the film shows what’s at risk if we keep the status quo, and what’s possible if we use math in service of a healthy society, a healthy democracy, and a healthy future for all of us.

The film is dedicated to Bob Moses, the Macarther genius and civil rights leader who saw math access as the civil rights issue of our time, and whose work we follow in some of the last filmed interviews of his life.
