Our Whole Lives
Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate, sexuality education program. It provides information about sexual development, as well as helps participants to clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality.
Our church community takes deep pride in offering OWL. With it we bless you and your family as you navigate growing up in a world riddled with complex social and sexual agendas. OWL is one of the many ways we minister to one another in love.
Underpinning the program is the belief that sexuality is an integral part of being human. OWL provides a positive, holistic approach to sexuality education taught in a safe environment where participants are helped to understand and make informed, responsible decisions regarding the challenges facing them as sexual beings.
We consider parents to be the primary educators of their children on sexuality issues. The OWL program helps foster meaningful conversation between parents, children, and facilitators. All of our classes are co-facilitated by adult volunteers from our church. Facilitators have undergone specialized OWL training from the Unitarian Universalist Association and thorough background screening.
K-1st Grade OWL
The early elementary class supports parents in educating children about birth, babies, bodies, and families. Sessions engage children with stories, songs, and activities that are age appropriate vehicles for sexuality education. In addition to eight class sessions, the program is designed to promote dialog between parent and child with the weekly HomeLink homework activities for parents and children to do together.
7th-9th Grade OWL
This class equips teens with accurate, age-appropriate information to help them make informed decisions about their sexual health and behavior. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, it provides facts about anatomy and human development, as well as helps youth clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality. Key topics such as body image, gender and sexual identity, peer pressure, social media, consent and healthy relationships are covered with sensitivity. As the youth explore these themes, facilitators emphasize co-creating a positive and safe group dynamic for all participants.
OWL is a lifespan program with classes for grades K-1, grades 4-6, grades 7-9, grades 10-12, young adults, and adults. Currently we are only planning to offer the above classes. Other local UU churches may be offering classes that are not on our schedule. Here is a directory of UU churches.
